Who We Are
Chicago Patrolmen's has been serving the financial needs of Chicago Police Officers and their families since 1938. The credit union was initially formed when members of the Chicago Patrolmen's Association decided to pool their financial resources for the betterment of all.Chicago Patrolmen's is one of approximately 9,000 federal credit unions serving over 86 million people in the United States today. Federal credit unions have been serving the nation's consumers for 65 years. Each federal credit union serves a distinct membership that shares a common bond of occupation, community or association.
A federal credit union is a cooperative, not-for-profit financial institution organized to promote thrift and provide credit to its members. Federal credit union members are provided with safe, convenient places to save and borrow at reasonable rates. Savings are insured up to at least $250,000 (plus an additional $250,000 for IRAs) by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund.
When Chicago Patrolmen's was first established in 1938, it was very much a "blue shirts" organization, with membership open only to police officers "on the beat" and their immediate family members. By 1949, Chicago Patrolmen's had grown to over $1 million dollars in assets. During this period, the credit union's Board of Directors implemented a "once a member, always a member" policy. This membership policy permits members to maintain their Chicago Patrolmen's accounts when they move up in the ranks of, or retire from, the Chicago Police Department. Both of these policies continue to be critical to the growth and success of the credit union.
Chicago Patrolmen's is, and has been, administered by a Board of Directors consisting entirely of current and former Chicago police officers.
Today, Chicago Patrolmen's serves police officers of all ranks, from the newest recruits to the former Superintendents' of Police. Chicago Patrolmen's serves 20,000 members, including police officer's families. In recent years the institution has grown rapidly and now has assets in excess of $318 million.
Chicago Patrolmen's is a full service financial institution. We offer a full compliment of lending and savings products as well as a host of additional services. We also provide our members and the people of Chicago with added safety and convenience with automated teller machines located in each of the Chicago Police Department's Area Headquarters and select districts. These automated teller machines are surcharge free for Chicago Patrolmen's Federal Credit Union ATM or debit cards.
Despite its growth, Chicago Patrolmen's mission remains the same as it was in the beginning: "to serve the financial needs of all Chicago Police Officers and their families in order to help them realize their life's goals." Everyday Chicago Patrolmen's strives to fulfill its mission by providing members with competitive financial products and services that facilitate borrowing, promote thrift, and encourage wise money management.
In addition to all its traditional financial services, Chicago Patrolmen's offers personalized service to each of its over 20,000 members. The Board, Management, and Staff of the credit union strive to help members in any way we can. We make every effort to listen to our member's concerns, save them money, and provide them with financial knowledge and education.
Visits to Chicago Patrolmen's offices are pleasant social events for the credit union's members. Tellers know members by name and offer assorted candy and fun stickers to their children. We have bilingual staff to assist your family members with their financial needs.
